We Made It!

Describe the day in one sentence

Our first full day in Lima was packed with history, culture and new experiences. With Freddie the bus driver expertly weaving our bus through the colourful maze of Lima’s streets, students quickly discovered that every corner of the city seemed to have a story waiting to be told.

The San Francisco Monastery offered students a fascinating insight into Lima’s colonial past. Its impressive architecture and rich history helped bring to life the stories of the people who shaped the city centuries ago. A particular highlight was exploring the catacombs beneath the monastery. Walking through the underground chambers was a unique experience and gave students a different perspective on Lima’s long and fascinating history.

While exploring Lima, we unexpectedly came across a colourful cultural parade. Traditional dancers in bright costumes filled the streets, accompanied by live bands and groups representing different regions of Peru. It was a reminder that Peru’s culture is incredibly diverse and that celebrations can appear around almost any corner.

We then travelled to Villa María del Triunfo for lunch with a local family. Harry first met the family while speaking with community members about their hopes for the future and the projects they wanted to pursue. What began as a conversation has developed into a lasting relationship over many years.

As we travelled through the area, students noticed a very different side of Lima from the modern shopping districts and tourist areas many visitors experience. Homes climb the steep hillsides and the landscape tells a different story about life in this vast city. Sharing a meal together gave students the opportunity to experience the warmth and generosity of their hosts while gaining a deeper understanding of the diversity of communities that make up Lima.

In the early evening, we explored Barranco, one of Lima’s most colourful and creative neighbourhoods. Set high above the Pacific Ocean, the area is known for its street art, historic buildings and coastal views. It was a wonderful place to wander, take in the atmosphere and reflect on a day filled with new experiences.
