Biking across the Andes and Laguna Huaypo
After arriving at Laguna Huaypo, students were greeted by a scene that was almost impossible to capture in a photograph. Surrounded by the towering Andes, the lake reflected the mountains above while patchwork fields stretched across the valley in every direction. It was one of those places that encouraged everyone to stop for a moment, take a deep breath and simply appreciate where they were.
Students then split into two groups. One group set off across the lake in kayaks while the other jumped on mountain bikes and began the ride towards Maras. Later in the day, the groups swapped activities, giving everyone the opportunity to experience both adventures.
For those on the water, Laguna Huaypo provided some unforgettable moments. As students paddled across the calm lake, the scenery was matched by plenty of laughter. Not everyone managed to stay completely dry, with a few kayaks ending up slightly less upright than intended. Thanks to the outstanding team from Amazonas Explorers, every student was equipped with wetsuits, wetsuit booties, life jackets and spray jackets which meant the `unexpected’ swims simply became another highlight of the adventure.
Meanwhile, the cyclists enjoyed a ride that perfectly captured the landscape of the Andes. Fast, flowing downhill sections brought plenty of smiles, while a handful of steeper climbs encouraged everyone to find their own pace. Some hills were more demanding than others, especially at 3,500 metres above sea level, but every effort was rewarded with another spectacular view or another exciting descent. It was a ride that challenged every student in different ways while leaving everyone with a real sense of accomplishment.
During one break, Harry offered a simple observation.
“Of course it’s hard. We’re at 3,500 metres above sea level. But have a look around you. See what we’re doing. It’s worth every bit of effort we put in.”
It was a reminder that some experiences are memorable precisely because they require effort.
Throughout the day, students encouraged one another, celebrated small victories and showed impressive determination whenever the activities became challenging. Whether paddling across the lake or pushing through another climb on the bike trail, everyone found themselves stepping a little beyond their comfort zone.
A special thank you must also go to the incredible team from Amazonas Explorers. Their guides looked after both groups with remarkable patience, encouragement and professionalism throughout the kayaking, paddleboarding and mountain biking. They built wonderful relationships with our students and ensured that every activity was both safe and enormously enjoyable.
By the end of the day there were tired legs, sore arms, dusty clothes and plenty of stories to tell. More importantly, there was a genuine sense of achievement. Students had spent the day exploring an incredible part of Peru while discovering that they were capable of more than they might have first imagined.
We are off to our homestay at CcorCcor… until next time,
