We acknowledge the Bpangerang People, the traditional custodians of this land, and we pay our respects to their elders, past, present and emerging.
The name of our school Wangaratta is the Bpangerang word for the long neck of the cormorant.
Middle Years
At Wangaratta High School our Middle Years includes all students and programs from Years 9 to 10. Students in our Middle Years are provided with a broad range of challenging programs reflective of the diversity of our broader community and are fortunate to be involved in quality, personalised, learning programs and co-curricular opportunities.
Some of these include: an extensive music program, CLC, outdoor education, drama and a variety of sporting and extension activities. Students are able to select from a broad range of courses so as to provide alternative pathways beyond secondary school.
Year 9
In Year 9 students consolidate their core learning as well as choosing electives from the Arts, Technologies, Health and Physical Education and Languages learning Areas.
All Year 9 students also undertake a student-directed, community-based, independent learning experience Community Leadership Challenge (CLC). This is one full day for one semester.
NAPLAN
NAPLAN testing takes place in Year 9 as an important check to see how well students are learning the essential skills of reading, writing and mathematics – skills that will set them upon the path to success as adults. For more information about NAPLAN please see here.

Community Learning Challenge – Year 9
(CLC)
The Community Leadership Challenge (CLC) Program is an integral part of Wangaratta High School and encourages students to link their learning to real life situations in a local and global community context whilst working with a dedicated team of teachers and mentors. This fantastic student opportunity has been running for over 25 years and we are proud to have our students take part in such a pivotal learning experience.
The CLC program builds on international research about student learning at a Year 9 level that indicates that the CLC program significantly enhances Year 9 independence in learning and maximises student learning potential for the future. Project based learning is considered best practice in teaching and learning; its relevance and links to the real world give students the opportunity to take control of their learning and develop the essential interpersonal and organisational skills that enable them to take their place as valued members of society.
CLC students have a dedicated learning space that provides a welcoming but educative atmosphere for all involved.
The CLC program comprises of a community project where students direct themselves in collaboration with the community to complete a project. Projects from previous years have included collaborations with local primary schools, aged care homes and community groups around environmental and wellbeing issues. Students present their projects at an end of year event.
Future Makers Outdoor Education Program – Year 9
This new program launched in 2024 with the purpose of developing future young people. Students will be challenged to become initiators, leaders and managers of change in a world where they have the ability to influence their own futures. The program delivers the learning capabilities through hands on experiential learning.
The program is operated and delivered by staff from 15 Mile Creek campus of The Outdoor School, which is a Department of Education school. Their staff deliver 1-2 days of content at the High School prior to the program commencing. The program then involves a 12 day residential component where students attend 15 Mile Creek and undertake a five day student led canoeing expedition down the Murray River in the middle of the program. Teachers from both the High School and Outdoor School 15 Mile Creek will deliver elements of the program with a collegiate team teaching approach.

Year 10
In Year 10 students consolidate their core learning as well as choosing electives from the Arts, Technologies, Health and Physical Education and Languages learning Areas. Students can elect to undertake a class known as ‘Trade Taster’ through GoTafe Wangaratta to learn about different trade qualifications.
Work experience is also provided to our students through different local businesses.
