Boys Football

Australian Rules Football has been played by our boys since at least 1916 – well over 100 years.

We know of 7 Boys Football teams to win the State Champion title, as well as 4 Senior teams that won the Herald Sun Country Shield.

Our 7 State Titles rank us one of the greatest Football schools in Victoria. We proudly sit Equal 5th all-time of the approximate 300 secondary schools State-wide, since such competition began in 1988. Only 4 schools have won more. No other Country school has more.

Regarding our 4 Herald Sun Country Shield titles, we can’t find a definitive list of winners across history, but our 4 triumphs likely places us high on that list as well

On top of this, 3 more of our Boys teams have finished State Runner-Up (two of them, by single-figure margins), and two teams were Herand Sun Runner-Up.

All 7 State Titles, plus 2 Herald Shields, were claimed in the Golden Era between 1994 and 2005. This coincides with our best era of producing AFL Footballers – 6 of our boys debuted in the AFL between 2001 and 2005.

Individually, 19 of our boys have played at the highest level, the AFL. Incredibly, some of those boys played in the same School Teams, as explained below.

We will soon announce our All Time Team made up of these boys, as well as a Team Of The Last 25 Years (2000-2025).

If anybody has photos or articles of teams we are missing, we would love to get them and include them here.

SO CLOSE

State Runner-Up Boys Football Teams

Five of our teams have gone agonisingly close, but finished State Runner-Up.

The 2004 Intermediate team went within a kick to Lilydale High at Sandringham. Captain Tyson Hartwig won the BOG medal in the losing side. Many of those Year 10s had won it in Year 8 at Whitten Oval. They were a kick away from their 2nd State Title in 3 years.

The 1995 Year 8 team was up with just seconds to go, but somehow gave up 2 quick goals to lose by 8 points to Warrnambool High at Skinner Reserve, despite the heroics of future Carlton midfielder Jon McCormick. Many of the team made amends as Year 12s, winning the Herald Shield by 10 goals against Ballarat High at Waverley Park.

The 1997 Senior Boys played off in the Grand Final of the Herald Sun Country Shield at VFL Park, Waverley. Many say they would have won that day, if their star player (Murray Bushrangers Scott Thompson) hadn’t done his ACL in an earlier game.

The 1991 Juniors were our first to make a Final, but got done by Wonthaggi SC at Princes Park.

The 1988 Senior Boys lost by 4 goals to Warrnambool Tech in their quest to win the Herald Sun Cup. It would have been back-to-back Cups for the Year 12s including 2 that would be drafted to the AFL just months later (Scott Williamson at CHB and Craig Patrick at Full Forward), and the school’s 3rd Cup in 4 years.
