We built two houses – can you believe it?
Apologies for the delayed news but I thought it appropriate that we publish the last two days of the blog so that trip finale can be included in the full storyline.
Let’s return to Thursday 2 July. After our incredible hard work finishing the required 24 panels (just on dark), we had a short circle de-brief, packed up the tools and headed in the bus straight to ‘El Olivar’ restaurant where ridiculously enormous plates of Lomo and Pollo de la Parrilla were served. Later we enjoyed 30 minutes at the Grocio Prado Plaza where the girls rode the kids ‘train’ around the plaza (see photo). We then headed to the ‘seedy’ Chevos Hostel and tried out the mixed-rooming challenge for a night. Tired bodies sleep well!!
The next morning we packed and headed straight to the house of the ‘ex-Alcalde’ Carlos Grimaldi. Mrs. (Orietta) Grimaldi had prepared us an amazing breakfast of eggs and bacon, avocado and bread rolls and fruit…to die for. We heard all about the history of the Chincha House-Building project and were suitable fed…and inspired as we headed back to the work-site and greeted all of our new friends and neighbours.
The building and painting was all a blur. EVERYONE worked ‘flat out’ for the next 4 hours. We installed window frames and painted panels until it was time to start building. Then it all just came together with absolutely everyone playing a key role. I have included the Time-lapse videos so you can see it happening…..but it was so very special. We were served an incredible lunch of ‘Carapulcra con Sopa Seca’ prepared by Lisseth’s mum …and then we kept at it …put on roofing panels, painting walls, painting murals, cleaning floors, mounting doors….until it was all ready and we celebrated with the most beautiful inauguration ceremony.
Oscar said, “When Lisseth burst into tears, I realised how important the house was!”
What an achievement by 24 incredible Wangaratta High School students!
