Netball
Netball has been played by our girls for over 100 years.
We know of 6 teams to win the State Champion title.
Our Golden Age of Netball. was the 1980s We won 6 State Championships in 9 years – Junior (1980), Intermediate (1984, 1986) and Senior (1982, 1983, 1988).
For good measure, we were also State Runner-Up 4 times in that same 9 year period – Junior (1982, 1984, 1985), Intermediate (1980), and Senior (1986), as well as three times later (Junior in 1993, Year 8 in 2009 and Senior in 2014).
A further 18 of our teams have made it to the State Semi Finals (State Top 4).
Incredibly, we had 3 girls in the same Under 18 State Netball team in 1980 – Rosemary Brown, Joanne Cesa and Megan Hume. They, along with Kate Clarke who had also previously made a State team, led our Senior Girls team (with 4 of the 8 players being State players) to the All High School State Title in 1982.
Milly O’Kane is our latest to make a State Netball teams. She wore the Big V dress for the Under 17s at the 2025 National Netball Championships in Sydney and got Bronze. She became the 1st Wangaratta girl to make a State Netball team in 30 years, signifying how difficult those teams are to make.
Prior to O’Kane, State Netballers were Kim Welch (1995, 1993, 1992), Lori Delaney(1990), Kate Morris and Narelle Young (Vice Captain) in 1985, Lisa Wilson (1982, 1984, also Australian team in 1982), Robyn Townsend (1982, Captain, also Australian team), Megan Hume (1980, 1981), Rosemary Brown (1980, 1981), Joanne Cesa and Kerry Fitzgerald (1980), Kate Clarke (1978), Sheree Hartwig (1975) and Gretchen Hartwig (1973).
If anybody has photos or articles of any Netball teams we are missing, we would love to get them and include them here.
