Victorian Certificate of Education (VCE)

The Victorian Certificate of Education (VCE) is the Certificate awarded by the Victorian Curriculum and Assessment Authority (VCAA) upon completion of secondary schooling, and is recognised as such throughout Australia.  It can be used as a pathway to University, TAFE, training or employment.

Wangaratta High School has a 100 percent completion and pass rate for Year 12 VCE students. Additionally, the number of students with 40+ VCE subject scores is consistently above the state average with the majority of students entering tertiary study after completing their VCE.

Wangaratta High School offers the widest variety of subjects for study at VCE level in North-East Victoria and is committed to assisting our VCE students develop effective study routines, strategies and skills as they undertake their final years of academic study. As such, the School offers a wide range of support to VCE students during their important final years of study. These include:

  • Teachers with specialist subject knowledge
  • Mentor teachers - these teachers have regular contact with the VCE students and are available to counsel and advise 
  • Teacher-Librarians - specialist knowledge of library resources and specialist knowledge of research techniques, programs and equipment 
  • VCE Centre -this is a designated study space that VCE students have access to during and after school hours. 

Victorian Certificate of Applied Learning (VCAL)

The Victorian Certificate of Applied Learning (VCAL) is a Senior Secondary Certificate of Education recognised within the Australian Qualifications Framework. It is for students who are likely to be interested in going on to training at TAFE, doing an apprenticeship or getting a job after completing Year 12.

Entry straight from school is not the only way a student can go to university. Some students study a VET course at TAFE during their secondary education, which may then lead to completing a diploma or advanced diploma at TAFE, and then decide they would like to complete a university course. VCAL is a step along this pathway.

The VCAL certificate is offered to students in Years 11 and 12 Wangaratta High School and students participate in the design of their curriculum, with a focus on project based, hands on learning.  

Student undertaking a VCAL Program have a number of compulsory subjects including:

  • VCAL Literacy or VCE English
  • VCAL Numeracy or VCE Foundation Maths (Year 11) or any VCE Maths
  • VCAL Work Related Skills or a VCE Technology Studies subject.
  • VCAL Personal Development Skills
  • Industry Specific Skills – VCAL students are required to study at least one VET subject from our many offerings.

Participation in VCAL at Wangaratta High School is through application and a selection process and must include a VET study for the successful  completion of Intermediate and Senior VCAL Certificates.

University Enhancement

The University Enhancement program is a Distance Ed option offered through universities. Studies in this program can contribute to a student’s final ATAR score and counts as a sixth VCE study and credit towards a first-year university study.
