Wangaratta High School is very proud of the outstanding achievements of our students in the various co-curricular programs offered to all students.

Sport

Wangaratta High School hold two whole-school sports events during each school year. The annual swimming sports, held early in Term One, are one of the most colourful events on the School calendar. This is an intra-school competition where each of the four Houses earns points for competing and for having the loudest, most colourful cheer squads, as well as through winning or placing in each event.

The annual athletics carnival is also a feature on the sporting calendar. Participation in the annual ‘Mini Olympics’ activities is compulsory for Year 7 students (an easy way to earn House points), and students in Years 7-12 choose to participate in the running, jumping and throwing events –  in large numbers each year

There are also lots of opportunities for students to participate in team sports and to represent the School at District, Eastern Zone and State championship levels.

Music Program

Wangaratta High School has an outstanding Music Program open to all students from Years 7 to 12. Individual and group music lessons in a broad range of instruments complement our Bands and Ensemble groups providing many opportunities for students to perform during each year in Concerts and other community events.

In 2017, we are excited to be working in partnership with local Primary Schools to establish the Wangarata Combined Primary Schools Concert Band Program.  This program will provide professional tuition and band rehearsals on concert band instruments to students in Grades 5 and 6 and transition into our Secondary Music Program.

Drama Production

Wangaratta High School offers an innovative drama program for all students from Year 7 through to VCE studies.  The annual School Production showcases the talent of students from all year levels and is a highlight of the School Calendar.  In 2015, the students presented “Popstars The Musical” based on music from the 1990s.

Overseas Personal Challenge Expedition

Each year, students in Year 9 are invited to take part in an overseas personal challenge expedition.  Wangaratta High School partners with Antipodeans Abroad to offer students a three or four week journey to a developing country where students learn to think on their feet, work together and gain real-world resilience. Through the Program students are empowered to work as a team as they make all travel decisions including where they get their next meal and which accommodation they will sleep in that night. The Program includes a meaningful and sustainable community service project; a trek through inspiring terrain; and sightseeing – all while engaging with locals and their cultural traditions

Youth Parliament

Youth Parliament is an initiative supported by the Victorian Government and provides the opportunity for young Victorians to stand up, talk hard and be heard.   Wangaratta High School offers this opportunity to Year 10 students where the students learn to draft and debate legislation, conduct research into issues and receive training in public speaking and leadership skills.

More than 20 Bills passed by Youth Parliament have gone on to become law, including laws covering mandatory wearing of bike helmets and nightclub safety reforms.   In 2015, Wangaratta High School student’s bill was successfully passed.

The Award is a fully inclusive program and has no social, political, or religious affiliations.
